Our Latest News38th European Wado Kai Karate Championship (October 22, 2011)
Six
young athletes from Wolverhampton returned in triumph from
Portugal this
week with a clutch of medals. The six martial artists, all members of the Central
England Wado-Ryu Karate Academy based at the IKON Martial Arts and Fitness
Centre in Bushbury, were part of the England Squad that took part in the 38th
European Wado-Kai Karate Championship held in Lisbon on 22nd and 23rd
of October.
Amelia
Harvey (16), Curtis Harvey (15), Connor Harvey (11), Megan Hill (11), Tom Steel
(11) and John Steel (10) secured between them a total of 13 medals, 12 gold and
1 bronze, from their participation in individual and team events during the
Championship. Five out of the six competitors won two medals apiece, with Megan
Hill securing three. The IKON students were part of a 54-strong England Squad
that competed against teams from nine other European countries including
athletes from
Russia,
Italy,
Spain
and
Romania.
The England Squad won a total of 30 gold medals during the two-day event.
The IKON
students were supported by a grant of £1,764 provided in September through
Wolverhampton’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. The fund is
targeted to help community organisations and local charities, and the grant
enabled the club to buy equipment essential for the competition.
Stennett
Harvey, chief instructor at IKON and Wado Kai England National coach, said: “I
am really proud of the way in which these six young students performed at
international level. They are a credit to the club, the City of
Wolverhampton and to the
England Squad.”
